Large-scale storage support program. Hungary’s 2024 competitive corporate storage tender awarded non-repayable CAPEX grants and ten-year revenue compensation to projects representing approximately 440 MW of planned storage capacity. Supported projects are required to operate for at least ten years and participate in the balancing market

First major bank-financed project completed in January 2026 under the support scheme. In January 2026, Greenvolt secured EUR 58.9 million of project financing from UniCredit Bank Hungary for a 99 MW / 288 MWh standalone BESS. The project benefits from ten-year revenue support awarded under the 2024 tender

Five things to know about BESS in Hungary.

BESS is expressly regulated and may require a dedicated storage license. Hungarian electricity law recognizes electricity storage activities but the regime remains closely linked to power-plant-style licensing. As a general rule, power-plant and generation provisions apply correspondingly to BESS irrespective of output capacity. The applicable license, permitting and notification route depends on project specifications.

Balancing services are central, but revenue stacking is developing. Revenue streams include balancing and ancillary services, including FCR and aFRR. Supported projects may also benefit from 10-year revenue compensation / cap-and-floor-style support awarded through public tender, improving bankability. Participation in balancing markets is subject to the TSO prequalification and technical requirements.

Public support has accelerated the market, but availability is program-specific. Hungary’s 2024 storage tender combined investment aid with ten-year revenue compensation and targeted approximately 440 MW of new capacity. Future support must be assessed under the terms of the relevant funding call.

Battery Icon

Hungary is a major European battery manufacturing hub, supported by the National Battery Industry Strategy 2030 and investments from CATL, Samsung SDI and others. PV capacity above 8 GW by 2025 creates strong domestic need for flexibility and co-located storage.

Power Grid Icon

Grid access and revenue bankability remain the principal challenges. Although Hungary has introduced dedicated support mechanisms and an increasingly supportive framework for utility-scale BESS, project viability continues to depend primarily on grid connection availability, revenue stacking, balancing-market participation and the long-term bankability of merchant revenues.
