Employee diversity networks, open to all

A strong commitment to inclusion and diversity

Our global diversity strategy is aligned with our business strategy and we seek to embed diversity and inclusion (‘D&I’) into our everyday behaviors, processes, systems and activities.

The six pillars that guide our strategic planning focus on local priorities, embracing intersectionality and leveraging difference to ensure that everyone has a platform to thrive:

  • leadership and accountability
  • evaluating our progress
  • balancing global and local
  • recruitment of diverse talent
  • awareness and career support
  • clients and collaboration

We are proud of our people networks – active groups of colleagues that are full of enthusiasm and passion for making a positive change to our business and beyond. Our networks are open to all our employees and partners, and we encourage allies to get involved too.

Our people networks:

  • help build a sense of community through peer support and a social network across geographical boundaries
  • raise awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion
  • provide insight and help highlight barriers to inclusion
  • provide a collective voice for minority groups and act as a sounding board
  • support our engagement with clients and external bodies

Hints and tips

Socials

A variety of socials have been arranged during your scheme to give you more of an opportunity to know your fellow vacation schemers better, as well as getting to know the people at Eversheds Sutherland and experiencing our culture. Whilst it is important to enjoy these events, remember you are still associating with your work colleagues and the graduate recruitment team.

Minimise distractions

As you will be working in the office throughout your scheme we recommend that you limit distractions and treat your working time seriously. Many students find it helpful to build a work plan with intermediate project milestones to track their progress and adjust course if needed between meetings with supervisors.

Work expectations

We want you to experience the best of Eversheds Sutherland and for you to be engaged the whole week. If you run out of work or don’t feel the work is stretching you enough, take the initiative to ask others in the team for work. Avoid taking on so much work that you struggle to give it proper attention, but don’t be shy in asking for more when you’re finished.

Two-way process

The vacation scheme is about us getting to know you as much as you getting to know us. We want to know if you are suited to a trainee role and likewise you should really be using these two weeks to test if a full service international commercial law practice is for you. The vacation scheme is a great chance to see first-hand what you are potentially signing up to as a future career, so you must seize the opportunity and find out as much as you can about us.

Network

Use your time with us to network and build relationships, as it will provide you with an invaluable insight into our culture. Make sure to network with a wide array of employees from Trainees to Partners.

Confidentiality

Please do remember that a lot of the work that we do with our clients is confidential and even that fact that we are representing them could be. So please do treat everything as confidential unless otherwise stated and do ensure you get permission from your supervisor or the Client Partner before you disclose anything externally.

Meet deadlines and manage your time effectively

Keep track of important dates and assignments and be sure to submit work in a timely fashion. Complete assignments on time and let your supervisor know if you have time to take on any additional projects.

Be yourself

Whilst you will of course be assessed on the work you produce, the teams will also want to see that you’re someone they can envisage working with. Try to be as comfortable as you can, be yourself and enjoy the time on the scheme.

Make lots of notes

Keeping writing materials with you at all times during the working day will ensure that you can write down and remember the wealth of information you will encounter during the scheme.

Contacts

Whilst you will of course be assessed on the work you produce, the teams will also want to see that you’re someone they can envisage working with. Try to be as comfortable as you can, be yourself and enjoy the time on the scheme.

If you are posting any content relating to your time on our vacation schemes please use the hashtag #ESVS2025.

Please make sure to keep any client/work details confidential and to not share these on social media.
