The Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition

Implementation status across EU Member States

Explore jurisdictions

The Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT) will introduce more stringent provisions in relation to misleading advertising by:

• prohibiting vague and ambiguous claims

• introduce higher thresholds to use sustainability labels

• banning general environmental or climate claims

The ECGT must be implemented into the national laws of EU Member States by 27 March 2026, and will become enforceable from 27 September 2026.

As the ECGT does not include a transition period, companies will need to comply with the new advertising rules from September 2026 when communicating about their ESG efforts.

This tracker will keep you updated on the status of the implementation of the ECGT across Europe.
