During his time with us, Hasnain built confidence, sharpened his legal skills, and deepened his respect for professionalism. Now in-house, he brings that same drive and strategic mindset to his current role, shaped by lessons learned both at the desk and, memorably, at the ping pong table.

What is your fondest memory of your time at Eversheds Sutherland?

I don’t have one single fond memory – I really value the entire experience. It wasn’t always easy, but that’s what made it rewarding. Over my two-plus years at the firm, I grew so much in terms of confidence and ability. I learned how to get the work done efficiently and effectively, and I had the chance to contribute not just through client work but also by writing articles and alerts. All of it showed me what it takes to operate at the top of the game.

What impact did the firm have on you as a lawyer?

The biggest impact was teaching me confidence and perseverance. Those are not skills that come naturally – you have to earn them. Once you do, they stick with you for the rest of your career. Knowing that I can take on a challenge, persevere, and succeed has been a game changer. Professionalism is also something I greatly admire – treating others with respect, even when you’re on opposite sides. You can be adverse and still be courteous, and I saw that consistently at Eversheds Sutherland.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of going in-house?

First and foremost, do what makes you happy. Law firm life can be rewarding, but it’s demanding and requires sacrifices. Going in-house is a personal decision, and for many it offers a better balance. From a professional standpoint, the biggest adjustment is moving away from the billable hour. In-house, you’re on more of a trust system. You need to demonstrate value in different ways – understanding what the business values and then delivering on that. It’s a shift in mindset, but it provides a level of autonomy and freedom.

What is something funny or interesting that people don’t know about you?

I actually won the firm’s ping pong tournament in the summer of 2023. In the finals, I beat a very strong opponent, Nick Christakos. My strategy was simple; just get the ball over the net and play defense. Nick probably would have beaten me 99 out of 100 times, but that day, “youth won,” as he told me. I still have the trophy!

Any final reflections?

I’m very thankful for my time at Eversheds Sutherland. I achieved more than I thought I could, learned from incredible colleagues, and gained an appreciation for professionalism at the highest level. I continue to speak very highly of the firm and the experience I had there.

Hasnain and his son hold dear the Eversheds Sutherland 2023 Ping Pong tournament trophy.
