Environment
At Eversheds Sutherland, we understand that our operations have a local, regional and global impact on the environment. We are committed to continuously improving our environmental performance and making a positive contribution to the conservation of our planet.
Through rigorous analysis, based on science and validated data, we have identified key areas of focus including:
– our energy use
– waste management
– resource use
– business travel
– environmental impacts related to our supply chain
To improve our environmental performance, we have set ourselves challenging targets and perform regular audits to ensure these are met. We regard environmental regulations, laws and codes of practices as the minimum standard that we should aim for and actively work towards exceeding these benchmarks.
Our long-term strategy consists of the following elements:
– become a net zero business by 2050 or earlier
– remove the use of natural gas from our operations and utilise renewable electricity where possible
– update our travel policy to be more sustainable by assessing each office individually and putting bespoke travel plans in place
– achieve firmwide ISO 14001 accreditation
– improve and streamline waste operations to limit waste ending up in landfill
– improve our positive impact on biodiversity, actively seeking out opportunities to further this enhancement
Our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative
In line with our goal of becoming a net zero business by 2050 at the latest, we are committed to emission reduction targets known as Science Based Targets (SBTs). Our targets are approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) – a gold standard for external validation.
We are committed to reducing our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 50% by 2030. These targets mean that we will remain aligned with the latest scientific research to limit the global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees celsius. These targets affect both direct and indirect carbon emissions produced by Eversheds Sutherland and its employees.
We report company-wide emissions for Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP for the following categories:
Scope 1
– natural gas – used for heating offices
– fugitive gases
– company cars
Scope 2
– purchased electricity used in offices, both renewable and non-renewable
Scope 3
– downstream leased assets
– employee commuting
– business travel
– waste generated in operations including water
– upstream transportation and distribution
– fuel and energy related activities
– capital goods
– purchased good and services
